A guided tour of the most
luxurious aerial science vessel of the century.
Artist's note:
For the past
several months, I've been designing the above airship in my spare
time using Google's free
SketchUp 7
tool. It is my first presentable
attempt at 3D art/modeling, and there's a lot more to it than meets
the eye! Along with the exterior, the entire interior of the
ship is fully designed and even furnished, featuring two bedrooms,
an upstairs, a downstairs, a laboratory, a kitchen, a bathroom, and
a cargo bay, all as part of the same giant model. Since I feel
like this is a pretty special
project, I've decided to present it in a unique way. Instead
of a straight-forward walkthrough or simple slideshow of pictures,
I've put together a "tour" complete with an enthusiastic tour guide for your
enjoyment. In its entirety, the following project is not just
about 3D art, but about planning, color theory, interior design,
science fiction, 2D digital art, and storytelling.
Setting the stage:
I
designed this airship as a spinoff of a larger body of work that
I've been doing for the comic battle website
War for Arcadia.
War for Arcadia focuses around a fictional nation called Arcadia,
which is where my own original characters
Fresia and Ted
are based out
of.
Ted is a scientist of sorts, and he has a history of designing some
fantastic contraptions, including the occasional airship. The
airship design that the following "tour" describes focuses on the
ship as though it was designed by him (not by me). Ted himself
is the tour guide, and I assure you he's quite happy to show you
around! In fact, I think he's been waiting for you...
